The Costs of Not Maintaining Your Roof

Why Roof Maintenance Is Worth Your Time (and Money)

Homeowners tend to think that roof maintenance is an incredibly difficult process that takes an extraordinary amount of time and effort. While getting up on a ladder and inspecting, cleaning and maintaining a roof is a bit awkward an challenging, doing so has the potential to save you thousands of dollars. Keep in mind, you don’t have to do it all yourself. Roofing contractors are available to inspect and repair your roof whenever you need our services.

Your Roof: The First Line of Defense Against Damage

Homeowners and business owners need to acknowledge the fact that a home’s roof is the first line of defense against wind, rain, snow, sleet and hail. This means that the roof is more important than any other home component. If it is compromised, the entire home can be damaged. A leaky roof can ruin expensive furniture, electronics, floors and even the home’s supporting foundation.

Simply put, the roof is the shield that protects the enormous investment that is your home. You have to do everything that you can think of to keep it in tip top shape.

How to Inspect Your Roof and Catch Issues Early

If you are brave enough to get up on a ladder yourself, you should perform an annual roof integrity check so that you can address potential problems before they snowball into expensive repair/replacement jobs. Take a look at the roof’s tiles, fascia and gutters. If you have the gumption, get up on the roof and walk around it to find any problem areas. Bring along a digital camera to take snapshots of any issues so that you can show a roofing expert the condition of your roof.

If you identify a problem site before it causes any damage to the roof or home, you’ll save yourself plenty of money in the long run. The key is to be proactive.

The Hidden Damage of Clogged Gutters

One of the most important components of a home’s roof is its gutters. Gutters should be cleaned at least two times a year at minimum. They can become clogged with leaves, dirt and other types of debris that fall from surrounding trees or are kicked up into the air during storms. Gutters that remain clogged for too long will have the potential to compromise the roof’s integrity.

Clogged gutters can hold rain water that often results in either a leak and/or damage to the roof’s surface. If the gutters are clogged long enough, it could turn into a problem that costs hundreds to thousands of dollars to fix.

Be sure to clean the gutters on a frequent basis and then spray off the roof with a hose afterward. Observe the water that you’ve sprayed to see if it drips through the gutters and if any leaks result.

How Tall Trees Can Wreck Your Roof

If your home has large trees next to it, you have to be very mindful of their impact on the home. It is best to plant trees with a good amount of space between them and the home so that its branches and leaves don’t impact the roof. Yet most trees are planted close to homes and homeowners in this situation should perform regular preventative roof maintenance in order to avoid costly repairs.

Tall trees have branches that can hang over the roof. These branches can easily fall onto the roof and damage its surface, including the shingles. They can also drop leaves onto the roof that can clog gutters or collect water that has the potential to produce harmful mold and algae. Be sure to trim these tree branches on a regular basis to avoid branch protrusions, clogs and mold that can severely harm the roof and cost thousands of dollars to repair.

First, let me say that I'm like most people in that I didn't *want* to have to replace my roof, but it became extremely obvious that it was time to do so. When doing my due diligence it seemed like Batterbee Roofing was the way to go, and I'm *so* glad I decided to work with them; it was truly a seamless experience! Everything from the quote to the scheduling to the install went without a hitch. I want to give a specific callout to Jeremiah, our project coordinator - he was notably professional, extremely responsive and made sure we were happy with every step of the project.

All in all, for an experience that is one most people undertake reluctantly, Batterbee made it as easy and pain-free as one could ask for!

We had the pleasure of welcoming Charles Carson into our home.He did a comprehensive review of our roof with a video of the condition, he then told us that it had at least 10 years left on it. Charles then went on to say that in his opinion there was absolutely no need to do anything at present, we respect his honesty and will be pleased to deal with him and Batterbee Roofing when the need arises in the future.
