It pays to keep your roof in good condition. Just as with anything else, the more you take care of it, the better it will perform and the longer it will last. And this is especially so with roofs. You need your roof to do its job, otherwise you could be looking at structural damage to your home and be protected less from severe storms. In the long run, it is much cheaper to fix minor problems with your roof as they arise than to have to replace the entire thing every decade. Extend the life of your roof, keep your home and its contents safe, and save money with these tips for roof care.

Clean your gutters

Leaves, twigs, acorns, pine needles, and other debris has a way of clogging up gutters, doesn’t it? While nobody likes cleaning gutters, it is an important task for keeping your roof in good shape. If your gutters are full, water can build up and start breaking down shingles which can lead to leaks and rotting.

Remove any debris that has piled up

Similarly, you will want to make sure that the surface of your roof is clear of all debris. Maybe a tree branch has fallen on your roof and causing a pile of leaves to build up behind it. This can trap water and damage your roof very easily. Always make sure your roof has nothing on it so that water can flow into gutters without obstructions.

Trim back overhanging branches

One way you can reduce the amount of gutter and roof cleaning you have to do is to trim your trees. That way, there is nothing hanging over your roof that can easily fall and rest on it. This might be especially prudent to do in the summer and fall, when there are frequent storms which often cause branches to break and leaves to fall.

Check for leaks

When it rains, go up in the attic every once and a while with a flashlight to do a quick check for leaks. Catching leaks early is important so you can spare your home from damage and mold, and fixing them quickly can extend the life of your roof.

Make sure your attic is well-ventilated

A hot attic can actually damage your roof. In the blazing sun, your attic can quickly heat up and store that heat if there’s nowhere else for it to go. This can cause the layer under your shingles to break down, resulting in the need for repairs or total roof replacement.  With proper ventilation, you shouldn’t have to worry.

Have periodic inspections

The eye-ball test will normally work just fine for the first couple years after a new roof is installed. But for roofs over 10 years old, it is highly recommended to schedule a professional inspection annually. That way, you have a timetable for how long your current roof has left before it is time to replace it.
